Energy awareness up after campaign

There has been an increase of 10 percent in energy awareness in BCFE, according to a recent on-campus survey.

The research, undertaken by the Ballyerfermot Post, was conducted as a
follow-up to a poll carried out last December which showed there was a
general lack of understanding in the college in relation PC use and
energy awareness.

In the past months there has been a concerted effort by college
authorities to educate students in this regard. Particular attention
was paid to computer usage with posters indicating appropriate shut
down times appearing in classrooms.

Original results indicated that approximately half of those surveyed
did not know when it was appropriate to shut down their computers, with
many saying the college had failed in its duty to inform them of
internal policy.

The latest study now shows that the percentage of students who know
when it is appropriate to fully turn off their computers has risen by
22 percent.

A further ten percent experienced an increase in their overall
understanding of the shutting down process, bringing the figures up
from 84 percent to 94 percent.

Ten percent reported an increase in understanding of college policy.

Commenting on the new survey Kevin Devine, one of BCFE’s  deputy
principals, said: “I’m delighted, and it proves a number of things: It
proves one, that the power of media, the power of persuasion and when
people become aware of an issue they will do something, certainly on an
issue like the environment issue which is almost universally popular.”

“Yes, I’m delighted and well done to the journalist for bringing the issue forward”.
