Nabac’n way they’ll stay at home
Dec 20th, 2008 | By Editorial Team | Category: FeaturesTraditional Irish music group, Nábac have recently appeared on the Irish scene.
They comprise of three men and two women, each with their own musical talents. Norianna Kennedy brings the vocal presence, her brother Paddy Kennedy is on flute, Liz Coleman plays fiddle, James Ryan on guitar and Ciaran O’Dongaile completes the line-up on his uileann pipes.
They have appeared in several international music festivals. In the last two years they have performed in Germany, Belguim, Italy and Denmark but the country that stuck out in James’ mind was Israel, which he described as a “the greatest crowd”.
Most of the band met while studying traditional music at BCFE, which James describes as “a great college”, that provided him with what he needed for the music industry. They first met Ciaran while they were gigging in Donegal where Ciaran was attending a different college doing the exact same course. It just went from there. It seems fate played a part.
James filled me in on where they came up with their unique name. “Nábac is an Irish word which basically means ‘no bother’, we all agreed on it straight away”.
They tend to take old songs and put their mark on them by mixing in fresh beats for a new fun sound. James described the band in two words “very diplomatic” but in five years time hopes to be “retired and living off royalties”.
Nábac will be performing in Dublin during December and January - dates to be confirmed.
